Bindley Bioscience Center Under Construction at Purdue

Construction has started on the newest addition to Purdue University's (West Lafayette, Indiana) $100 million Discovery Park. The $15 million Bindley Bioscience Center is one of five new centers planned for the Park and will have a total of 50,000 square feet, with 18,000 square feet of lab space. The project is scheduled for completion in 2005.

The Center was designed for interdisciplinary research, supporting projects in the areas of genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics and instrumentation development. Weigland Construction (Fort Wayne, Indiana) is handling construction of the Center. Flad & Associates (Madison, Wisconsin) served as architect, lab planner and structural engineer and Affiliated Engineers (Madison, Wisconsin) handled the project's mechanical, electrical, plumbing and telecommunications engineering.

A unique feature of the Center is that there will not be permanent lab space assignments. Each of the six open lab spaces have been modularly designed to accommodate differing project sizes, allowing teams of researchers to change labs to suit specific projects. Features include two high-hood intensity labs, one medium-hood intensity lab, one low-hood intensity lab and two instrument labs (Imaging and Mass Spectrometry). Other components of the project are a flexible utility room, cylinder storage closets, balance rooms, a tissue/culture/radioisotope lab, a Constant Temperature Laboratory and wet preparation/cold rooms.
