Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--One of America's first stand-alone, commercial-scale biodiesel plants has closed its doors after an 18-year production run in Hawaii.
The biodiesel plant, owned by Pacific Biodiesel Incorporated (Kahului, Hawaii), an affiliate of SeQuential Pacific Biodiesel LLC (Salem, Oregon), and located at the Central Maui Landfill, pre-processed waste oil at the location and shipped the oil to the main plant in Hilo, where it was further processed into biodiesel.
The plant at the landfill produced one million gallons a year of biodiesel and the plant in Hilo produces 2.6 million gallons per year.
Late last year, the company received a notice from the Maui County Department of Environmental Management saying that continuing the current operation would require multiple permits and extensive upgrades to comply with new county requirements. Robert King, president and founder of the company, said, "With just over two years left on our contract, we couldn't justify the costly site improvements that were required to meet the county's demands."
The company got started in 1995 in response to environmental and health concerns surrounding unmanageable quantities of used cooking oil at the Central Maui Landfill.
Since then, four biodiesel plants are operating on the island and another four are under development. It is estimated that more than $500 million could be invested in the biofuel industry on the island.
