Black Hills State Unveils Science Research Building in Spearfish, South Dakota

Reported by Annette Kreuger, Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--South Dakota is not usually the first state that leaps to mind when one is considering biological research, but the state is determined to change that perception. Black Hills State University recently completed construction on an $8 million research building in Spearfish.

With biology listed as one of the top three majors at Black Hills, school officials pushed for the new building, which welcomed its first students this month. Clark Enerson Partners (Kansas City, Missouri) designed the two-story, 26,000-square-foot building, which features a DNA core lab, three research laboratories, and the Center for the Conservation of Biological Resources.

The project was designed to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building standards, with energy-conserving items, including a variable-air-volume (VAV) single-duct system. The school is expecting formal LEED certification for the building. FMG Incorporated (Rapid City, South Dakota) served as the project's civil engineer, while Gustafson Builders (Rapid City) served as construction manager.
