Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Privately held ice cream maker, Blue Bell Creameries (Brenham, Texas), has broken ground this week on an expansion at its Sylacauga, Alabama ice cream manufacturing plant. The addition will expand the plant by 12,000 square feet. Plans are to construct a highly-automated cold storage facility that will increase finished product storage capacity and streamline distribution.
Cost estimates for the project are in the $10 million range and the addition is expected to create eighteen new jobs when complete in January of 2007. The project will not expand the companys capacity for producing ice cream, just improve distribution.
The Sylacauga plant is one of three creameries operated by Blue Bell in the U.S. The company has been producing ice cream in Alabama since 1996 and also has a plant in Broken Bow, Oklahoma that was built back in 1992. The original creamery has been in Brenham, Texas since the company was formed back in 1907. Blue Bell operates over 30 branch facilities in the Southern United States.
