BP's Nerefco Refinery Readies for a Series of Maintenance Shutdowns

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--BP plc (NYSE:BP) (London, United Kingdom) will perform a series of maintenance shutdowns at the 400,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) Nerefco Refinery (Europort, Netherlands) in the fourth quarter of 2009.

The refinery will shut down the Cracking Area to perform a planned maintenance turnaround. The work will begin by reducing the 60,000-BBL/d Fluid Catalytic Cracking Unit and the 8,000-BBL/d HF Alkylation Unit by mid-September. The maintenance and cleaning work will continue in October with the rest of the units in the Cracking Area, such as the 83,000-BBL/d Vacuum, the 27,000-BBL/d Reformer and the 33,000-BBL/d Reformer Unit. The turnaround is expected to last 30 nonproduction days.

Planned turnarounds at the Nerefco Refinery are performed every four years; the next maintenance shutdown at the cracking area will be in 2013. Separately, the Crude Area is scheduled to undergo a maintenance shutdown in 2012, affecting the 200,000-BBL/d Crude Unit.

Nerefco Refinery suffered a power outage on July 31 and was forced to shut down all units for a week; by August 7, the plant had resumed operations and was processing without any inconveniences.
