Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Plant officials say that Braidwood Nuclear Station (Braidwood, Illinois), which is owned by Exelon Nuclear (Morris, Illinois), a subsidiary of Exelon Corporation (NYSE:EXC) (Warrenville, Illinois), has delayed its 1,178-megawatt (MW) Braidwood Unit 1 from returning online due to an extended nuclear reactor head inspection.
Plant sources said that the inspection and other maintenance will be completed before the unit is ready to go back online. Officials hope to return the unit online by October 24. The unit shut down October 3 for a scheduled refueling, which was expected to last about 18 days.
Braidwood Nuclear Station has two generating units, which generate a capacity of 2,330 megawatts when at full-load. Both units began operation in 1988.
Exelon Nuclear represents approximately 20% of the U.S. nuclear industry's power capacity, with 10 power plants and 17 reactors that are in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey and produce enough electricity to power, on average, 17 million American homes annually. Approximately 92% of Exelon's total electricity generation is nuclear power.
