Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Bioenergetica Vale do Paracatu SA (Sao Paulo, Brazil) is planning to begin operation of a sugarcane factory in August 2009 in Paracatu, Minas Gerais, in southeastern Brazil. Bioenergetica is expected to select a firm this month to assemble the equipment, which has been purchased from several manufacturers. The factory will crush about 3 million tons of sugarcane per year.
Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Economico e Social (Rio de Janeiro) financed part of the $280 million investment required by the Paracatu project. Power will be generated out of bagasse burning, yielding 80 megawatts to power the plant. The remaining energy will be sold to the grid. The electric equipment was purchased from Brazilian companies Schneider Electric Brasil (Sao Paulo), Weg Equipamentos Eletricos SA (Santa Catarina) and ABB Brasil (Sao Paulo).
The alcohol equipment was manufactured by Sermatec Industria e Montagens (Sao Paulo), and the distillery capacity will be approximately 80 million gallons of fuel ethanol per year. The Paracatu plant will not produce sugar during the first two years; the sugar production facilities are expected to be installed in 2011 or 2012.
