Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In March, Brazil's state-owned company for power generation and distribution, Eletrobras (Rio de Janeiro), its subsidiary Furnas Centrais Eletricas S.A. (Rio de Janeiro) and the Brazilian construction firm Construtora OAS (Sao Paulo) expect to finish the feasibility study regarding the construction of the 2,000-megawatt (MW) Inambari Hydroelectric Power Plant, which is planned to start structural erection in 2010.
The $5 billion project is expected to become operational in 2016 and will be equipped with six 234-MW Francis-type vertical-axis turbine generators. The hydropower plant is located in the city of Madre de Dios in southeastern Peru, 300 kilometers from the Brazilian border.
The consortium expects to open equipment bids in the third quarter of 2009 and plans to export most of Inambari's generated electricity to southern Brazil, creating an energy corridor between Madre de Dios and the Brazilian state of Acre.
Construtora OAS owns a 51% stake of the Inambari consortium. The company was established in1976 and is one of the most important construction companies in Brazil. The firm, which has a presence in several Brazilian states, has expanded its action to other countries in Latin America such as Peru, Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile. In the power sector, the company is devoted to engineering, planning, execution, works management and concessions of transmission lines, and thermoelectric and hydroelectric power stations.
