Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--MC2 Energia e Participações Sociedade Anônima (Camaçari, Brazil), a company in the power generation sector whose major shareholder is CIBE Energia (São Paulo, Brazil), a division of CIBE Participações e Empreendimentos Sociedade Anônima (CIBEPar) (São Paulo, Brazil), was awarded the status of independent energy producer by resolutions issued by the Ministry of Energy and Mines last December and in January this year.

This was done in connection with 10 different power generation projects that are expected to be complete by the last quarter of 2012. CIBEPar is itself a common holding whose ownership is equally divided between Grupo Equipav (Campinas, Brazil) and Grupo Bertin (Lins, Brazil).

The total capacity of these 10 projects reaches 2,474 megawatts (MW), which will be apportioned as follows: Camaçari 2 (176 MW), Governador Mangabeira (176 MW), Iconha (184 MW), João Neiva (330 MW), Joinville (330 MW), Macaíba (400 MW), Pecém 2 (350 MW), Rio Largo (176 MW), Santo Antônio de Jesus (176 MW), and Sapeaçu (176 MW). These facilities are to be in northeastern Brazil: four in Bahia; three in Espírito Santo; and one each in Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará, and Alagoas.

Both João Neiva and Joinville thermo power projects will consist of a 330-MW, combined-cycle plant running on natural gas. They will be equipped with two 110-MW combustion turbines attached to a 110-MW wasteheat steam turbine. Construction works are expected to begin in March 2011 on both sites, with January 2013 being the estimated project completion date. João Neiva will be in the city of the same name, in the state of Espírito Santo, while Joinville will be in Nova Venécia, also in Espírito Santo. The total investment value for each project amounts to $325 million.

The other eight plants will be equipped with internal combustion engines. Rio Largo, Camaçari 2, Iconha, Sapeaçu, Santo Antônio de Jesus, and Governador Mangabeira are to have 10 diesel-fired engines of 17.6 MW each. MC2 already has purchased the engines and is negotiating the EPC contract with the engines' manufacturer. These eight plants should be operational by September 2012.
