Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Brookfield Asset Management Incorporated (NYSE:BEPC) (Toronto, Canada) far outpaced its investment-management peers in attracting fresh capital in the third quarter, as its portfolio--which is focused on renewable-energy and infrastructure developments--now has more than US$100 billion that can be invested in new projects. "We are very fortunate that the businesses where we have established a leadership position remain in strong demand by investors," said Connor Teskey, the president of Brookfield, in an earnings-related conference call. "We closed our sixth private equity strategy at $12 billion, our largest ever to-date."
Some of the highest-valued North American projects from Brookfield are managed by Evolugen, its renewables-focused Canadian subsidiary. At its 165.6-megawatt (MW) Comber Windfarm near Lakeshore, Ontario, Evolugen is seeking permits to construct a battery energy-storage system (BESS) unit at the site, which would use lithium-ion batteries to store up to 350 MW. Since early 2021, Evolugen also has been weighing a proposed green hydrogen project in Gatineau, Quebec, a 20-MW electrolyzer that would produce roughly 3.4 million standard cubic feet per day of carbon-free hydrogen. The latter project supports Quebec's plan to go carbon-neutral by 2050.

In the U.S., Brookfield's renewable-focused subsidiaries are at work on several major solar-energy projects. In early 2022, Brookfield acquired Urban Grid Solar, which is managing the development of the 75-MW Foxglove Solar Plant in Stephens City, Virginia, which recently started construction and is slated to wrap up in mid-2024. Urban Grid also is seeking permits for the 122-MW Aspen Road Solar Plant in Spring Run, Pennsylvania, which could begin construction as early as next summer. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the Foxglove and Aspen Road projects.
Brookfield also acquired Scout Clean Energy in 2022, which is preparing to begin construction on the 161-MW Markum Solar Plant in Valley Mills, Texas, before the end of the year. In September, Scout signed an agreement with Colgate-Palmolive Company (NYSE:CL) for the latter to purchase power from Markum. Subscribers can learn more from a detailed project report.
Scout Clean Energy also is involved in Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners' (New York, New York) 200-MW Sweetland Windfarm in Miller, South Dakota. Scout is developing a substation at the windfarm and a related switching station, which will be connected by an eight-mile transmission line. Scout's projects began site preparation earlier this spring and are set to wrap up in fourth-quarter 2024. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the Sweetland Windfarm and Scout's substation, switching station and transmission line.
Outside North America, Brazil represents the most significant investment from Brookfield and its subsidiaries, with a 150-MW solar-energy complex in Milagres, Ceara, slated to begin construction next summer. During the third quarter, Brookfield also invested US$4.7 billion of capital toward its acquisition of Triton International Limited (Harrison, New York), announced in April. "Triton is the world's largest lessor of intermodal shipping containers, and this transaction expands the buildout of our international logistics and supply chain operations capabilities," Brookfield said in a press release.
