Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Bruce Power LP has started a feasibility study for the construction of a 1,000-megawatt (MW) nuclear power station in Saskatchewan in the Battleford or Prince Albert areas. Saskatchewan's government initially looked at the possibility of additional nuclear generation a couple of years ago. Bruce Power released a statement last month stating that it had started the initial process of site evaluation and the feasibility of such a project. Sources said that the company is in the very early stages of development and that it has not yet determined whether a nuclear facility is best suited for the selected areas. Once a site has been selected, the company will begin the necessary permitting, engineering and design aspects for this almost $4 billion project. If Bruce Power decides to construct a nuclear station in this region, it will take approximately four and half years to construct. The plant would create about 1,500 maintenance and operations jobs.

Bruce Power is a partnership made up of Cameco Corporation (NYSE:CCJ) (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan), TransCanada Corporation (NYSE:TRP) (Calgary, Alberta), the BPC Generation Infrastructure Trust, the Power Workers Union and the Society of Energy Professionals. The company supplies approximately 15% of Ontario's electrical generation. The group owns the Bruce Nuclear Power Stations A and B in Tiverton, Ontario, that are both powered by the Atomic Energy of Canada's (Mississauga, Ontario) CANDU 9 pressurized heavy water reactors capable of generating 900 MW. Each station contains four of these reactors, which currently generate approximately 4,700 MW of electricity. Bruce A has two units undergoing restart and reconditioning. Once complete in fall 2009, the station will increase generation by 1,500 MW for a total generating capacity of 6,200 MW. The company is also reviewing plans to construct another nuclear generation station in Nanticoke, Ontario, with a capacity of 3,200 MW scheduled to come online in late 2018.
