Bureau Valley School District to Start Construction of Wind Power Plant

The school board will about use 400,000 kW of the 660,000 kW power and will sell the rest to Illinois Power at about three cents per kW.

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Bureau Valley School District #340 (Manlius, Bureau County, Illinois) is preparing to start construction on a wind turbine/generator. Bureau Valley is having a 660-kilowatt (kW) Vestas V47 installed east of the high school football field in Manlius, Illinois. The wind turbine/generator, with installation and auxiliary equipment, will cost about $950,000, but through $500,000 in grants from The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity and the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation, the project will only cost the school board $450,000 plus interest.

The school board will about use 400,000 kW of the 660,000 kW power and will sell the rest to Illinois Power at about three cents per kW. The savings created by the wind turbine/generator is expected to be around $90,000 per year. This will allow the Board to pay for the unit in just over five years.

Bureau Valley used EAPC Architects & Engineers (Grand Forks, North Dakota) as its consultant. The wind turbine/generator will be installed through an engineer, construct, and operate contract with Vestas American Wind Technology (Portland, Oregon), a regional operation of Vestas Wind Systems A/S (Copenhagen: VWS) (Ringkobing, Denmark). The construction is to start in the latter part of September and be completed and operational by the end of November 2004.
