Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Subcontractor bidding documents and requests for quotations (RFQs) for major equipment will be issued throughout the rest of this year for the $1.9 billion, centrifuge-based tailings management plant at the Mildred Lake oil sands mine near Fort McMurray, Alberta. The project is about 75% complete. Construction began in early 2013 and is expected to be completed in early 2015.
The tailings management project will use centrifuge technology that combines bitumen with a flocculent, in a tumbler than spins at high speeds to separate the solids from water. This project is part of Canada's effort to increase production of oil from oil sands.
The project, located about 25 miles north of Fort McMurray, is being developed by Syncrude Canada Limited (Fort McMurray), a joint venture whose major owners include Canadian Oil Sands Limited (OTC:COSWF) (Calgary, Alberta), Imperial Oil Limited (NYSE:IMO) (Calgary) and Suncor Energy Incorporated (NYSE:SU) (Edmonton, Alberta). Two Chinese government-owned companies also own about 16% of this project.
AMEC Americas Limited (Calgary), a subsidiary of AMEC plc (LSE:AMEC) (London, England), is providing engineering and procurement (E&P) services to the project. KBR Canada Limited (Edmonton), a unit of KBR Incorporated (NYSE:KBR) (Houston, Texas), is the general contractor.
