Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The National Energy Administration stated, "China is actively developing clean energies such as nuclear power, and the installed capacity of nuclear power in China will surpass France and Japan and become a worldwide large country in nuclear power generation in 2010," at the symposium for the 30th anniversary of Daya Bay Nuclear Power Station on December 28, 2008.
At the end of 2008, China had 11 nuclear power units in operation, including five units at Qinshan I, II & III; two units in Tianwan in the Jiangsu province; two units in Daya Bay; and 2 units in Ling'ao I. The total installed capacity of nuclear power in China reached 9,000 megawatts (MW). However, the installed capacity of nuclear power projects currently under construction or that have received approval surpassed 22,000 MW. In 2008, China approved and started the construction of four nuclear power projects, including the Ningde and Fuqing nuclear power projects in Fujian province, the Yangjiang project in the Guangdong province and the Fangjiashan project in the Zhejiang province.
As a relatively clean, safe and highly efficient source of energy, nuclear power has gained increasing approval from various parties. The long-lasting freezing and snowstorm experienced in the beginning of 2008 fully demonstrated the outstanding advantages of nuclear power in regard to fuel transportation and power system stability. The international financial crisis also stimulated the Chinese government to launch and accelerate the construction of a group of key projects, including the construction of several nuclear power projects at the end of 2008.
According to the Eleventh Five-Year Plan, the installed capacity of nuclear power in China will reach 40,000 MW by 2020, accounting for 4% of the total installed capacity in China. The proportion will be further increased to 16% in 2030. The NEA is working on related policies to further promote the development of nuclear power in China, according to persons in charge of the NEA and the National Nuclear Safety Administration.
