Written by Amir Richani for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Chilean state mining company Codelco (Santiago, Chile) has submitted an environmental impact assessment to extend operations at its Gabriela Mistral copper mine to 2055. The project will include investments of more than US$800 million.
The mine has an output of 110,000 tons of copper per year. It was inaugurated in 2008, with a life of mine forecasted for 15 years. Mining operations were extended to 2028, and now the company seeks to stretch operations further.
Among the main projects included in the life expansion is to end the use of inland water supplies for operations by 2035. Instead, the company will rely on water resources from third parties, with previous environmental evaluation.
"Although the basin that supplies us is not used by people, flora or fauna, nor is it connected to other aquifers, our commitment is to maintain high standards in the control of its use, because we understand its importance not only for the present but also for the future," said Claudia Cabrera, the general director of the Gabriela Mistral division.
According to Cochilco, the Chilean mining regulator, the Gabriela Mistral mine produced 86,500 tons of copper between January and October this year, about 2.6% more than during the same period last year.
