Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Phase II of the Hongyanhe Nuclear Power Station could be included in the nation's Eleventh Five-Year Plan (2006-10) instead of the Twelfth Five-Year Plan (2011-15), said Hu Wenquan, General Manager of Liaoning Hongyanhe Nuclear Power Company Limited (Dalian, China).
The plant, located in Wafangdian city, was the first nuclear power project to be built in northeastern China's Liaoning province with a total planned capacity of 6,000 megawatts (MW). The project utilizes CPR1000 technology developed by China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group Corporation (Shenzhen, China). Construction of four 1,000-MW units in Phase I was officially kicked off in March 2008 and the first unit is scheduled to begin operation in 2012. So far, construction is progressing smoothly in various aspects. On January 8, 2009, prefabrication work began of the nuclear power island in Phase I.
According to the original schedule, Phase II was listed in the Twelfth Five-Year Plan. However, as China is currently revising its development of nuclear power, the construction of nuclear power projects could be accelerated if they meet certain conditions. The Hongyanhe plant is considered to be in top condition; therefore, China Guangdong Nuclear and the local government proposed to accelerate the project and are appealing to include the project in the Eleventh Five-Year Plan. If approved, the plant will receive an additional $3.6 billion of investment. The number of units will increase to six and become one of the largest nuclear power projects in China.
