China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) and China Oil and Food Corporation (COFCO) to Construct Ethanol Production Unit

China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) and China Oil and Food Corporation (COFCO) signed a cooperation agreement, by which both companies will jointly construct a fuel ethanol production unit with an annual capacity of 1 to 1.2 million tons.

Sinopec (NYSE:SHI ) is China’s largest energy and chemical two-in-one company. It occupies the leading position in oil refining, chemical production, research and development, and petroleum product sales. Sixty four percent of all China’s petroleum product sales is achieved by Sinopec. COFCO is China’s largest oil and food importer/exporter and is also the country’s leading food manufacturer. In May 2006, Sinopec and COFCO already signed agreement regarding the construction of a bio-ethanol fuel project with the annual capacity of 200,000 tons at Hepu in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. To facilitate the sales of fuel ethanol in Guangxi, Sinopec’s Guangxi Company has already submitted the application to Guangxi Regional government to fund the renovation of eleven ethanol fuel dispatch stations.

By the latest contract between Sinopec and COFCO, 20 cellulosic ethanol production units with an annual capacity of 100,000 tons will also be built.

It is also reported that this joint project between Sinopec and COFCO will also involve bio-chemistry research, production and application.
