Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In the last 10 years, the average return on investment (ROI) in China's pharmaceutical research and development (R&D) market has declined, which creates an obstacle for China's small- and medium-sized developers of patterned drugs.
But larger-scale enterprises do not necessarily possess an advantage. Structural reforms, technology introduction and employee education/adjustments for traditional pharmaceutical companies often require more investment. In such situations, companies with bigger capital advantages would hand over a few R&D tasks to commissioned contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) companies.
Industrial Info is tracking 29 active projects in China's pharmaceutical R&D market, totaling about $3.89 billion in value. The largest is from a state-owned Nanjing Pharmaceutical Company Limited (Nanjing, Jiangsu), followed by WuXi AppTec (Shanghai). Together, these two companies contribute 59.33% of China's total R&D investment.
