Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--China has achieved progress on work for a Westinghouse AP1000-based inland nuclear power station. Overall design, key-system engineering and equipment design for the power station have been completed, according to the State Nuclear Power Technology Corporation (SNPTC) (Beijing).
China currently has 9,000 megawatts (MW) of nuclear power in operation, and another 22,000 MW of nuclear power projects have received approval. All of these nuclear power projects are located in coastal areas. To build nuclear power stations in inland regions is an important part of the nation's policy of actively promoting nuclear power construction. According to decisions made by the State Council of China, inland nuclear power stations in China will be based on the AP1000 technology introduced from the United States.
SNPTC is currently working on the Pengze Nuclear Power Station, which is to be built by China Power Investment Corporation (Beijing) in Central China's Jiangxi province. The project has a total planned capacity of 5,000 MW to be built in phases. Two 1,250-MW units will be built in Phase I, and the construction period is proposed at 56 months. Construction is scheduled to begin by the end of 2010.
In the second phase, SNPTC will actively advance international cooperation regarding the research and development of extra-large cooling towers for the nuclear power station, and enhance the communication with potential project owners of the station. The preliminary safety assessment report for the station is expected to be complete by the end of 2009.
