Finished formulation manufacturers in India are facing the cascading effect of shutdowns in China caused by outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). India, one of the largest suppliers of generic medicines to the world and home to about 12% of all manufacturing sites catering to the U.S. market, relies on China for 70% to 80% of some specific active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).

India's Pharmaceutical Export Promotion Council (Pharmexcil) expressed concern that as many as 57 APIs used in formulations of vital antibiotics, vitamins and hormones could go out of stock if the lockdown were to continue long-term in China.

Notably, APIs for antibiotics such as metronidazole, chloramphenicol and azithromycin as well as Vitamin B6 are imported from Hubei province, whose capital is Wuhan- the epicenter of coronavirus outbreak. Industrial Info is tracking developments at 303 formulation plants in India, which have a total of 1,410 functional management contacts.

Click here for a list of API projects in China, and see graph below for a breakdown by province.
