City of Tallahassee Begins Construction on 94-Megawatt Expansion Project at Hopkins Power Station

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). City of Tallahassee Electric Department (Tallahassee, Florida) has started construction on the $40 million, 94-Megawatt expansion project at the Arvah B. Hopkins Power Station located in Tallahassee, Leon County, Florida. The City of Tallahassee decided to move forward on the project, in order to help meet the electricity requirements for customers during peak summer months.

Construction for the project started in early March 2005 and is anticipated to begin full commercial operation by the summer 2005. The project will consist of adding two natural gas-fired 45-Megawatt GE Power Systems LM6000 SPRINT combustion turbine generators to the existing 356-Megawatt Hopkins site. The new units will operate in a peaking capacity, generating power when demands are at their highest, which is often during the summer and winter months. State-of-the art air emissions-reduction technology including selective catalytic reduction (SCR) for the reduction of NOx emissions and the use of catalytic oxidation for the control of CO emissions will also be utilized for the project.

Sargent & Lundy LLC (Chicago, Illinois) will perform the engineering duties for the project. The Industrial Company (TIC) (Steamboat Springs, Colorado) will act as the general contractor for the project.
