CNOOC to Build Offshore Wind Power Projects, Related Support Facilities in Fujian Province

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) (Beijing) signed an agreement in late November with the government of Fujian Province to build offshore wind power projects and related support facilities, such as equipment manufacture and maintenance, in Fujian. According to the agreement, CNOOC will choose Fujian as a place for project deployment and investment planning and to launch more cooperative projects through expanded investment based on the Phase I of CNOOC Fujian liquefied natural gas (LNG) project.

CNOOC will extend its LNG industrial chain in Fujian, develop cold energy projects, promote the construction of a backup gas source, produce oil-storage projects and build a coastal heavy chemical industry zone. According to the agreement, the parties will promote the development of new energies, such as wind power, in Fujian. CNOOC will soon start to build offshore wind power projects, as well as related support facilities including equipment manufacture and maintenance based on its advantages in offshore production.

Fujian lacks oil and coal but is rich in wind resources. Based on preliminary estimates, the province has a total wind-energy reserve of 41.31 million kilowatts at the coastal area of which 6.07 million kilowatts are technically exploitable. The reserve of offshore wind energy resources is expected to be three to four times the total onshore reserve, which is expected to be a major exploitable energy resource. According to the electric power development planning in the 11th five-year plan (2006-10), the total installed capacity of wind power in Fujian will reach 600 megawatts in 2010, accounting for 2% of the total installed capacity in the province.
