Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Latin American countries are pressing themselves to adopt clean energy standards more widely. Ecopetrol, Colombia's state-run petroleum refiner, aims to reduce harmful emissions and produce diesel and gasoline with less sulfur content, as well as produce clean fuels with little or no emissions.
A resolution was issued in 2020 to encourage a $780 million refinery project in Barrancabermeja, a city in the Santander department. The facility would follow Colombia's plan to develop fuels with a maximum sulfur content of 50 parts per million (ppm) until 2030, and 10 parts per million (ppm) onward. The plan includes five new processing units, which are scheduled to be operational by 2026.
