Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Colombian company Maquiltec SA (Bogota, Colombia), in association with the Chilean company Iansa (SCL:IANSA) (Santiago, Chile), is currently developing a fuel ethanol project in Colombia, for which sugar beet will be used as feedstock. The plant is to be in the state of Boyaca, northeast of the capital Bogota.
The construction of the facility is expected to begin during the second quarter of 2010, and to be complete around May 2011. The plant has been designed to yield about 30 million gallons of fuel ethanol per year. The investment required for the development of this project is estimated to be $130 million.
Currently, all the fuel ethanol produced in Colombia is obtained from the fermentation and distillation of sugarcane juice in the sugar mills of the Valle del Cauca and Cauca states, in the southern part of the country, where sugarcane has been grown traditionally. However, several greenfield projects similar to the Maquiltec SA and Iansa project are being developed in other areas of the country that also present adequate soil and climate conditions.
Iansa is a subsidiary of the Chilean company Sociedad de Inversiones Campos Chilenos (SCL:CAMPOS) (Santiago), which is controlled by ED & F Man Holdings Limited (London, England), a company that provides shipping and financial services, and trades sugar, coffee and biofuels, with offices in Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
