The Yunfu Power Plant was built with two 125-megawatt (MW) units with intermediate storage-type pulverized coal boilers, double cylinder steam turbines and dual inner water cooling generators. The plant was commissioned in 1991. Two additional 135-MW units with circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boilers were commissioned in 2001. The Phase III expansion is comprised of two 300-MW CFB units with flue-gas desulfurization devices. The power plant was built and is operated by Guangdong Yuedian Yunfu Power Plant Company Limited (Yunfu), a subsidiary of the Yuedian Group.

In March 2008, the project received approval from the National Development and Reform Commission, as part of China's strategy to replacing smaller power generating units with more efficient, larger ones. Through the joint efforts of all parties involved in the construction, both units passed the 168-hour trial operation in July and August this year.

The Phase III expansion increased the installed capacity of the Yunfu power plant from 520 MW to 1,120 MW. The plant will help provide a strong power and energy industry base in Yunfu. Successful completion of the project will help alleviate the power shortages resulting from increasing demand in Yunfu City, promote the social and economic development in Yunfu City, and will create a broader platform in achieving the objective of energy conservation, emission reduction and environmental power generation.
