Completion Expected in March for Athens Generating Station

Athens Generating Company Limited Partnership (LP) is expecting construction for the first phase at its Athens Generating Station to be completed by the end of March

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Athens Generating Company Limited Partnership (LP) is expecting construction for the first phase at its Athens Generating Station to be completed by the end of March. The $550-million, 1,056-megawatt (MW) combined-cycle electric generating facility is situated on 250 acres, in Athens, Green County, about thirty miles south of Albany, New York.

The facility consists of three 245-megawatt Westinghouse 501G combustion turbines, with three Nooter-Eriksen heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs), plus a 321-megawatt Westinghouse steam turbine generator. The project is ninety percent completed, and will be coming on line in three phases. The combustion turbines are scheduled in March, followed by the heat recovery steam generators in April, and the steam turbine in May. Final completion is expected in June.

The plant will be fueled by natural gas and use combined-cycle technology to get the most of the plant's efficiency, minimize environmental impacts and ensure a reliable, safe and cleaner source of electric power. Combined-cycle plants are the most efficient producers of electricity available today.

Electricity is produced at these plants by heat recovery steam generators recycle heat from the exhaust of the combustion turbines and use it to produce steam, which is used to drive the steam generator.

Bechtel Power Corporation (San Francisco, California) is providing engineering, procurement, and construction services (EPC) for the plant for a minimum of 12 years.

The Athens Generating Station is being built for Athens Generating Company L.P, a wholly owned, indirect subsidiary of PG & E Corporation (NYSE: PCG) (Bethesda, Maryland), which develops, builds, owns and operates electric generating, natural gas pipeline facilities, and provides energy trading, marketing services.
