Consol Energy Expands West Virginia Underground Coal Operation to Create Eastern Coal Region's Largest Coal Mine

Consol Energy Incorporated (NYSE:CNX) (Pennsylvania) is proceeding with construction of facilities to increase capacity of the McElroy underground coal mine from 7.1 to 12.5 million tons of coal. Once the mine reaches full production in 2003, it will be the largest coal mine producing eastern coal in the US. Currently, Consol's Enlow Fork mine in Pennsylvania is the largest coal mine east of the Mississippi River, producing 9.8 million tons annually. The expansion will include the addition of a second longwall mining machine and expansion of the coal prep plant. Cost for the project will exceed $10 million. Farnham & Pfile Construction Incorporated (Belle Vernon, Pa.) is the General Contractor for the project.
