Advanced plans are underway for construction of a new research center at the University of Michigans Ann Arbor campus. The 215,000 square-foot building will focus on ophthalmology and Type-1 diabetes research, as well as some clinical space. Attached to the existing Kellogg Eye Center, when the new building opens, the main research focus will be conducted by vision scientists working with the latest technologies to develop new treatment for ocular conditions. Construction management of the project will be handled through a joint venture of Gilbane Building Company (Providence, Rhode Island) and Clark Construction (Chicago, Illinois), the same team responsible for construction of the schools $220 million Biomedical Science Research Building (BSRB) (see: Anatomy of a New Research Building: University of Michigans $220 Million Biomedical Science Building)
In addition to ocular-related activities, roughly 30,000 square-feet of the facility will house the Brehm Diabetes Research and Analysis Center. The Brehm Center will feature research labs, systems analysis and bioinformatics offices, a "Cure Room" convening space and related support spaces. Another 11,000 square-feet within the building will be assigned to general Health System research and related support spaces. Shelled space to accommodate future expansion was also incorporated into the design. The project is scheduled for completion in 2009.
