Construction Starts for 800-Megawatt Natural Gas-Fired Cogen in Italy’s Northwest Region

Construction commenced in May of this year on a grassroot $480 million, 800-megawatt environmental-friendly cogeneration power station, located in Italy’s Northwest region in the town of Livorno Ferraris, in Piemonte state. The power plant is owned by Germany’s E.ON AG (NYSE:EON ) (Dusseldorf, Germany) and will be operated by its wholly owned Italian subsidiary E.ON Italia SpA (Milano, Italy). The power plant is being built under a turn-key engineering, procurement & construction contract, which was awarded to Germany’s Siemens AG (NYSE:SI ) (Munich, Germany). The power plant completion and commissioning schedule is set for fourth quarter 2007 or early first quarter 2008.

The 800-megawatt natural gas-fired combined-cycle cogen will be built with two highly reliable Siemens V94.3A combustion turbine generators, with fully developed compressor and proven low noise combustors, providing a normal base load output of 265 megawatts. It will also be fitted with two-heat recovery steam generators driving a single 270-megawatt steam turbine generator set in a combined-cycle configuration. The power plant will also have the most advanced mechanical and electrical equipment plus instrumentation and control system available. The contract will also cover gas turbine maintenance for both turbines for a continuation of up to twelve years. The electricity produced will help serve the Milano metropolitan region plus alleviate some of Italy’s high dependency on energy imports.
