Construction Substantially Complete on Krystal Biotech's $80 Million ASTRA Gene Therapy Plant, an Industrial Info Market Brief

Early last year, construction began on Krystal Biotech's second gene therapy manufacturing plant in Findley Township, Pennsylvania. The company built the commercial-scale plant to avoid being caught in the current shortfall in production capacity for cell and gene therapies. As final preparations are made, the ASTRA plant will expand Krystal's production platform within its existing smaller clinical-scale plant ANCORIS, once it is up and running later this spring.

The 100,000 cGMP ASTRA plant will allow the in-house incorporation of raw material preparation, excipient manufacturing, testing, packaging, labeling and distribution. It will be used initially as a commercial backup facility for B-VEC, which is being developed for the treatment of dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa, a rare and devastating skin disorder. Later, it will produce other commercial gene therapy medicines to treat patients suffering from debilitating rare diseases.
