Construction to Begin on Navasota Odessa Power Plant in Texas

The equipment needed to begin site preparation will be arriving shortly and work will begin on the estimated 14-month timeline set for the completion.

Released Wednesday, March 15, 2006

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Navasota Odessa Energy, LLC (Houston, TX) has received an air permit from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality for the construction of the Quail Run Energy Center. Site preparation is now underway on the first phase of this $200 million dollar facility, which will produce 550 megawatts (MW).

Two separate power plants will make up this energy center, and they are located near the existing Odessa-Ector plant, which is owned by Texas Independent Energy. All three of these plants were sited in this resource rich location because of the access to the necessary water for the cooling process, close proximity to the power grid, and an abundance of natural gas. This will bring nearly 200 construction jobs to the area, and when complete, fourteen permanent employees will be hired to operate and maintain the site.

The equipment needed to begin site preparation will be arriving shortly and work will begin on the estimated 14-month timeline set for the completion. Quail Run will include two separate 275 MW trains. These combined cycle systems will each consist of two GE MS7001EA natural gas-fired combustion turbines that will feed into two Deltak Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs) and will then fuel a GE steam turbine.

These plants will help ease the pressure of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), who will need to replace the energy produced from many of the aging power plants in the state. The construction of this energy center could prove to be an even bigger benefit to ERCOT, if it attracts the near-zero emission FutureGen project. This site was visited earlier this year and has been named as one of the top five candidates for this highly anticipated venture.
