Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Construction is under way to add 170 megawatts (MW) to the 554-MW natural-gas- and fuel-oil-fired Newman Power Station in El Paso, Texas. The project comprises two 85-MW MS7011EA turbines manufactured by General Electric Power Systems (Schenectady, New York), a division of General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut), operating in simple-cycle mode.

El Paso Electric Company (NYSE:EE) (El Paso) contracted PB Power Incorporated (San Francisco, California), a subsidiary of Parsons Brinkerhoff (New York, New York), as the owner's engineer and Wood Group Power Solutions (Houston, Texas), a subsidiary of the Wood Group (Aberdeen, Scotland), as the general contractor for this project. Civil construction began this year. The company has started structural erection of the support systems for the two new units, which are scheduled to come online in the second half of 2009. The company is reviewing plans to convert the new units into a combined-cycle power block in the future.

El Paso Electric generates approximately 1,000 MW of electricity throughout Texas and New Mexico and has been serving the El Paso metropolitan area for more than 100 years. The Newman plant has been operational since 1960.
