Consultant Awarded on $180 Million Rail Corridor Extension in Texas

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Lopez Garcia Group (Dallas, Texas) has been selected to provide preliminary engineering consulting services for the proposed $180 million Rowlett Corridor Rail Extension in Garland, Texas for the Dallas Area Rapid Transit System (DART) (Dallas, Texas).

The Rowlett extension will include a 4.6-mile rail extension with one station from downtown Garland, Texas to downtown Rowlett, Texas. Upon full funding and permitting approval, an engineering and construction firm will be selected in the late spring of 2007. Construction is anticipated to begin in the spring of 2009, with overall completion slated for late fall 2010.

In 1997, the Rowlett Corridor was included as a Phase II project in the DART transit system plan as an extension of the Northeast Corridor, which begins at Mockingbird LRT station in Dallas and ends in downtown Garland. The $400 million Northeast corridor was completed in November 2002 and included 11.8 miles of Railway.

Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) is a regional transit agency created by voters on August 14, 1983. DART currently serves Dallas and twelve other surrounding cities with 45 miles of light rail transit, 130 bus routes, 31 freeway miles of high occupancy vehicle lanes (HOV), and paratransit service for the mobility impaired. The DART Rail System is expected to double in size to 93 miles.

DART currently operates 45 miles or rail service and includes 35 stations. Its starter system construction budget is estimated at $850 million. The North Central, Northeast construction budget is estimated at $1 billion. As of July 2006, weekday average light rail ridership was estimated at 63,753.
