Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). The Steam Generating Team (SGT) (Charlotte, North Carolina), a joint-venture of Washington Group International (Boise, Idaho) and Framatome ANP (Lynchburg, Virginia), an AREVA and Siemens Company, has been awarded a contract by AmerGen Energy Company, LLC (Kenneth Square, Pennsylvania), a subsidiary of Exelon Corporation (NYSE:EXC) (Chicago, Illinois), to provide services for replacing two steam generators at the Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Station (Middletown, Pennsylvania). (See related June 19, 2006, article: Energy Firms Invest in Pennsylvania Nuclear Fleet to Provide Reliable Power).
Steam generators are used in pressurized-water-reactor nuclear plants to transfer heat from the water inside the reactor to a second water system that turns the heat to steam and drives the turbine generator to make electricity. Steam generator replacement costs tens of millions of dollars, but they are the fundamental components of nuclear facilities and are replaced periodically as part of the plants long-term maintenance needs.
The Steam Generating Team (SGT) will provide project management, engineering, and construction services. The Three Mile Island steam generator replacement will take place during a scheduled refueling outage in the fall of 2009.
AmerGen Energy also owns and operats the oldest operating nuclear plant in the U.S, The Oyster Creek Nuclear Power Station (Forked River, New Jersey), which includes a single 641-megawatt General Electric boiling-water-reactor (BWR) on an 800-acre site. The unit came online in 1969, with a license scheduled to expire in 2009. AmerGen is seeking to renew the license for an additional 20 years.
Jointly-owned by Exelon Corporation and AmerGen Energy, the one-unit, 985-megawatt General Electric boiling-water-reactor Clinton Nuclear Power Station (Clinton, Illinois) is their newest nuclear facility.
