C&S Wholesale Grocers Underway on Expansion in Massachusetts

After completion of the project in January of 2004, the building will be among the largest storage freezers in the world

Released Friday, September 26, 2003

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Privately held, C&S Wholesale Grocers Incorporated (Brattleboro, Vermont) is underway on an expansion project at their frozen foods storage warehouse in Westfield, Massachusetts.

Seventy percent of the footings for the 174,000 square foot building addition are in and the company expects to begin erecting steel at the 96-acre site at 55 Summit Lock Road by next week.

Plans call for a forty-foot high structure with hi-bay rack and pallet storage area that will expand the site to some 521,000 square feet and over 20 million cubic feet of freezer space. After completion of the project in January of 2004, the building will be among the largest storage freezers in the world.

Acting as their own general contractor, the company selected Gartner Refrigeration (Plymouth, Minnesota) as the primary refrigeration contractor responsible for installing the massive ammonia refrigeration system.

Additional refrigerated docks will be added to the building as well as more material handling systems to handle the extra product volume.

Project costs are estimated to be in the $12 million range.

For 85 years, C&S Wholesale Grocers has provided first-class warehousing & distribution services for grocery store operators. In 2002, Forbes Magazine ranked C&S the 11th largest privately held company in the nation. The company operates 36 warehouse facilities throughout the United States and serves some of the largest supermarket chains in the nation.
