Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Now that construction is complete and validation is winding to a close, the new Cytovance Biologics plant in Oklahoma City will soon open its cGMP certified doors for business (reference: Pharmaceutical Tracker - Online Database). When fully operational, the 44,000 square-foot facility, which will offer contract biopharmaceutical development and manufacturing services, will operate two bioreactor systems supplied by Sartorius BBI Systems, Incorporated (Bethlehem, Pennsylvania).

For its state-of-the-art cell culture production and purification plant, Cytovance chose Sartorius’ Biostat DC-100C (100 L working volume) and Biostatat D-500C (500 L working volume) bioreactor systems. Located within dedicated production suites, the bioreactors will be used to process clinical and early commercial-scale batch-fed production of therapeutic protein and antibody products derived from mammalian cell cultures. The company will also be using Sartorius’ multi-fermentor/bioreactor control system (MFCS) software, which is designed specifically for data acquisition and supervisory control of cell culture processes.

Cytovance President William Fallon, who formed the company in 2003, is familiar to both Oklahoma City and the field of biologics. Fallon was one of the founders of Novazyme Pharmaceuticals, a company that focused on enzyme replacement therapies for lysosomal storage disorders, a group of genetic diseases caused by the absence of certain cellular enzymes. In 2001, Genzyme, Incorporated (Cambridge, Massachusetts) (glycobiology division) purchased Novazyme and its Oklahoma City facility for an estimated $225 million.
