Datong Power’s Expansion Project Receives NDRC Approval

The two 66-megawatt Supercritical Direct Air-cooling Units Expansion Project of Guodian Datong Power Generation Company Limited, is one of the key projects in northern China, as part of the nation’s strategy on “transmission power from west to east,” and one of the important projects in Shanxi province and Datong city. The project received approval from the National Reform and Development Commission (NDRC) recently.

Compared with other power projects, the project has four obvious advantages: (1) the incorporation of direct air-cooling technology reduces cooling water usage, solving a water shortage problem in North China, and allowing the construction of large capacity generating units; (2) water used for power generation will be totally taken from a sewage treatment plant, which not only saves water, but also will improve the comprehensive utilization rate of urban sewage; (3) the adoption of 100% flue gas desulfurization (FGD) technology and NOx reduction devices will greatly reduce the emission of harmful gases such as SO2, and NOx; (4) and supercritical technology will be adopted for the boiler and steam turbine will be adopted to increase efficiency and use less coal.

The project is jointly invested by Guodian Power Development Company Limited (60%) and Beijing Energy Investment (Group) Company Limited (40%). The project is expected to be put into operation in the first half of 2009 with an investment of $680 million. Upon the completion of the project, the total installed capacity of Guodian Power Corporation in Datong will reach 3,720 MW, and the capacity of units with obvious water saving, environmental, direct or indirect air cooling units will achieve 2,920 MW, accounting for 78.5% of the total installed capacity.
