Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland) - DONG Energy (Fredericia, Denmark) has confirmed plans to construct the Burbo Bank Extension windfarm in the U.K. which will produce enough power for approximately 180,000 homes.
Burbo Bank Extension is located 8 kilometres (km) off the U.K.'s west coast in Liverpool Bay. It will consist of 32 MHI Vestas Offshore Wind V164-8.0MW wind turbines with a total capacity of 258-megawatts (MW) and will be commissioned in 2017.
The project is the first of three projects for which DONG Energy received support under the government's Contract for Difference (CfD) scheme in April. It means that DONG will receive a fixed price per megawatt hour (MWh) of electricity produced for the first 15 years of operation.
"I am very pleased that with this final investment decision we can now begin the construction of Burbo Bank Extension which will supply green power to approximately 180,000 U.K. households," commented Samuel Leupold, Executive Vice President in DONG Energy. "The construction and operation of this wind farm will support green growth and employment in the UK. The decision to construct Burbo Bank Extension using an 8 MW wind turbine is another significant step towards reducing cost of electricity on future projects."
The existing Burbo Bank offshore windfarm, also owned by DONG Energy, has a capacity of 90 MW. The new windfarm got the green light from the government in October. For additional information, see October 2, 2014, 2014, article - Green Light for 250-MW Burbo Bank Windfarm.
Following DONG's investment decision, the U.K.'s Secretary of State for Energy & Climate Change, Ed Davey, said: "The UK is ranked as the best place in the world to invest in offshore wind projects. The decision by DONG underlines the fact that we are providing certainty for investors, resulting in a steady stream of private funding for renewable electricity projects and the creation of thousands of green jobs. We want an energy mix that is built on diverse, home-grown sources to make sure our supplies are clean and secure. Wind power is vital to this plan, with £14.5 billion invested since 2010 which is powering over 3 million more homes across the U.K.".
Just last month, DONG received planning consent for the 650 MW Walney 3 offshore windfarm project, located 19km off Walney Island in the Irish Sea. DONG claimed the project will be capable of powering up to half a million homes. For additional information, see November 11, 2014, article - Green Light for U.K. Walney 3 Offshore Windfarm.
