Dongfang Electric Signs $410 Million Equipment Contract for 3,300-Megawatt Jirau Hydropower Plant

The Energia Sustentavel do Brasil consortium recently signed a $410 million contract with Dongfang Electric Corporation (SHA:600875) (Chengdu, Sichuan) and Dongfang Electric Machinery to supply the remaining equipment for the 3,300-megawatt (MW) Jirau Hydropower Plant northwest of Brazil on the Madeira River.

The facility will be equipped with 46 75-MW hydraulic turbine generators, of which Dongfang will supply 18 bulb-type turbine generators. Construction is expected to begin in the first half of 2009, with the first unit expected to be operational by February 2012. Last month, Energia Sustentavel signed an $823 million contract with Alstom Hydro, a subsidiary of Alstom SA (EPA:ALO) (Levallois-Perret, France), to supply 10 bulb-type turbines and 17 generators for the power station. The other 18 turbines generators will be provided by Va Tech and Siemens (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany). The Jirau Hydropower Plant and the Santo Antonio Hydropower Station are both part of the 6,450-MW Madeira River Complex, a project with an investment cost of $9.8 billion. The complex, which is located in the state of Rondonia, is considered essential by the Brazilian government in order to help the country meet power demand.
