Researched by Industrial Information Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Sooner Power Station, which is in Red Rock, Oklahoma, and is owned by Oklahoma Gas & Electric Services (NYSE:OGE) (OG&E) (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma), tripped its coal-fired units 1 and 2 offline late on August 8, due to a failure in the transmission lines that was caused by severe storms.
The outage at the plant is still under investigation, and officials have described the area in which the plant is located and its surrounding areas as a "war zone." Officials expect to analyze the necessary repairs at the plant and work as expeditiously as possible to return the units online soon. They say that the repairs may be minor and that they hope to have the plant back to generating power this week. Officials plan to return Unit 2 online by Thursday and Unit 1 by Friday, if there are no delays.
The coal-fired plant has two generating units and a total generating capacity of 1,332 megawatts when at full load capacity.
OG&E is a regulated electric utility company that serves more than 750,000 customers in Oklahoma and western Arkansas and a number of wholesale customers throughout the region. With nine power plants capable of producing 6,100 megawatts, OG&E generates about 70% of its electricity from sulfur coal in Wyoming and 30% from natural gas.
