Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Duke Energy Renewables, a unit of Duke Energy (NYSE: DUK) (Charlotte, North Carolina), has started operations of the 200-megawatt (MW) fourth phase of its Los Vientos windfarm in Texas.

The windfarm is located near the Rio Grande in Willacy County, Texas. The completion of phase IV marks 426 wind turbines now up and spinning at the facility. The windfarm now generates 912 megawatts (MW) of wind-harnessed electricity.

Austin Energy (Austin, Texas) had entered into a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Duke Energy Renewables to purchase the 200 MW and associated renewable energy credits from Los Vientos IV. With this new PPA, Austin Energy now purchases over 665 MW of power from Duke Energy Renewables. br>
The project was built by Wanzek Construction, a subsidiary of the Mastec Incorporated (Coral Gables, Florida) (NYSE: MTZ). Amshore US Wind, a subsidiary of American Shoreline Incorporated (Corpus Christi, Texas) provided the development support. Vestas Wind Systems A/S (Aarhus, Denmark) supplied the 100 V110-2.0MW turbines; this company also is supplying a five-year warranty period over the turbines and will provide operations and maintenance services for three years.

The first phase of Los Vientos began in 2012; since that time, Duke Energy Renewables has installed additional three phases.
