Duke Energy Extends Outage at North Carolina Station

The unit was originally shut down for a refueling on March 12 and was scheduled to return on May 16. The outage has been extended due to control rod issues. Officials are in the process of fixing the problem and hope to have the unit online in a couple of weeks.

The McGuire Nuclear Station is located on Lake Norman in Huntersville, North Carolina. Commercial operations started in 1981 with a Siemens Westinghouse steam turbine. In 1984, Duke Energy decided to add an additional steam turbine to increase its capacity to 2,200 MW. Plant officials are considering adding a third steam turbine (1,100 MW) in 2014, which would give the station a grand total of 3,300 MW of generation.
