Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Duke Energy Renewables, the renewable energy branch of Duke Energy (NYSE:DUK) (Charlotte, North Carolina) has resumed construction on the 200-MW Frontier Wind Power Project. The project is located in Oklahoma about five miles east of downtown Blackwell, in Kay County.
Frontier Wind is Duke Renewables' first renewable power project in Oklahoma. The $400 million windfarm comprises 61 Vestas V126 wind power turbines that are approximately 3.3 megawatts (MW) each in capacity. It is expected to reach commercial operation in the fourth quarter of 2016.
Oklahoma has 1,200 MW of wind capacity under construction. The state ranks fourth in the nation for wind generated power.
The City Utilities of Springfield, Missouri will purchase electricity from the project under a 22-year power purchase agreement.
Frontier will join Duke's largest wind projects to date. Only Los Vientos II in Texas beats it, with 202 MW.
Duke Energy Renewables owns more than 1,600 MW of wind power generating assets: 1,097 MW of that capacity is in Texas; 370 MW is in Wyoming; 150 MW is in Kansas; 139 MW is in Pennsylvania and 51 MW is in Colorado.
The company also has 800 MW in its pipeline set to become operational in the next two years. Two of those projects are under construction in Texas, totaling 310 MW.
There is a trend in the wind power industry to focus building larger projects in the range of 150 MW to 200 MW, with technological advances in efficient turbines to drive cost reductions.
