Edwin Hatch Nuclear Unit Offline for Repairs

Plant officials confirmed that the main motor control bus breaker failed due to low water levels in the feed water and condensate pumps.

Released Wednesday, August 08, 2007

Researched by Industrial Information Resources (Sugar Land, Texas) -- Edwin Hatch Nuclear Station located in Baxley, Georgia, tripped the 900-megawatt Unit 02 on August 7, 2007, due to a main motor control breaker bus failure. The Hatch station is jointly owned by Georgia Power Company, a subsidiary of Southern Company (NYSE:SO ), Oglethorpe Power, Municipal Electric Authority, and the City of Dalton, Georgia.

Plant officials confirmed that the main motor control bus breaker failed due to low water levels in the feed water and condensate pumps. Sources confirmed that both pumps were shutoff to control any excess flow of water to the generator although they are still investigating the problem. Plant officials have stated that if repairs were not prolonged, they would prepare for start-up late Tuesday evening or early Wednesday morning.

Hatch Nuclear Plant became operational in 1975. The nuclear plant has one other generating unit, which will continue to run at full load. The total generating capacity of the station is 1,800 megawatts.

Georgia Power Company is an investor-owned tax paying utility that serves 2.25 million customers in all but four of Georgia’s 159 counties. It’s the largest of four electric utilities that make up Southern Company. Georgia Power has been providing electricity to Georgia for more than a century at rates well below the nation’s average.
