Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--China's power consumption in the second half of 2014 is expected to increase by 6.5% over the same period last year, according to a new report issued by the China Electricity Council (CEC). Power consumption for all of 2014 will be 6% higher than 2013, the report says.
In the first half 2014, China's power consumption reached 2.63 trillion kilowatt-hours (kWh), an increase of 5.3% over the first half of 2013. The monthly growth rates in the second quarter reached 4.6%, 5.3% and 5.9% respectively.
In the first half 2014, the installed capacity of newly commissioned units reached 36.7 gigawatts (GW). As of the end of June, the installed capacity of power plants with a capacity of more than 6 megawatts (MW) in China reached 1,251 GW, an increase of 9.4% over the same time last year. However, investments in power projects dropped 12.7% in the same period, including a 35% reduction in hydropower, a 7.7% decrease in thermal power and a 9.3% cut in nuclear power investments.
Following the commissioning of key hydropower projects such as the Xiluodu, Xiangjiaba hydropower stations in southwest China, the installed capacity of conventional hydropower under construction at the end of June 2014 totaled 27.5 GW, a drop of 31 GW from the same time last year, and the installed capacity of conventional hydropower projects that began in the first half 2014 was less than 1 GW.
According to the council report, the proportion of installed capacity of non-fossil energy as part of the energy mix will keep rising this year. The total installed capacity of newly commissioned units in 2014 will reach about 96 GW, including 30 GW of coal-fired power, 60 GW of non-fossil energy and 6 GW of gas-fired power and others. By the end of 2014, the expected installed capacity nationwide will reach about 1,340 GW, including 820 GW of coal-fired power and 450 GW of non-fossil energy, accounting for about 34% of total.
