Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Process systems and solutions provider Emerson Process Management (Austin, Texas), a subsidiary of diversified global technology company Emerson Electric Company (NYSE:EMR) (St. Louis, Missouri), has entered into an agreement with integrated oil and gas major Lukoil Group (OTC:LUKOY) (Moscow, Russia) to upgrade 13 of the latter's petrochemical and refining units across Eastern Europe and Russia. Lukoil hopes that the modernisation initiative will increase the company's competitive edge.
The upgrades are expected to lower environmental impact from the refining process. In addition, the process automation solutions will help Lukoil plan refining operations based on oil availability and increase the productivity of the company's facilities. The project is scheduled to last until 2014.
As part of the agreement, Emerson will provide the required equipment, process technologies and services from the design stage through installation, startup, commissioning and training. Emerson will install Plantweb digital-automation architecture with smart wireless technology at the facilities, comprising a mix of branded solutions and components, including the DeltaV digital automation system, the DeltaV SIS process safety system, AMS Suite predictive maintenance software, Rosemount® data collection and measurement instruments, Micro Motion® Coriolis meters to measure flow and density, and Fisher® control valves.
The Lukoil facilities selected for the modernisation project include Neftochim Bourgas in Bulgaria, ZAO Lukor in Ukraine, Vars in Latvia, and Saratovorgsintez and Stavrolen in Russia. The project will extend to facilities in Odessa in Ukraine, Perm in Russia, the Volgograd region, the Komi Republic and Romania.
Lukoil owns four refineries in Russia, which are located in Perm, Ukhta, Volgograd and Nizhny Novgorod. The facilities have a combined capacity of 950,000 barrels per day (BBL/d) of oil, while the company's other overseas facilities and joint ventures yield another 460,000 BBL/d.
Emerson's PlantWeb digital architecture is an intelligent system using several paramaters that can be predicted and handled accordingly. Further, the solution allows the linking of all aspects of the plant, including control processes, helping optimise performance. Plantweb is reported to improve plant efficiency by at least 2%.
