Energy Firms Invest in Pennsylvania Nuclear Fleet to Provide Reliable Power

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). With more than 9,600 megawatts of nuclear generation capacity, Pennsylvania is one of the largest states for nuclear generation in the U.S. The process of maintaining and expanding the nuclear fleet in Pennsylvania is ongoing and is providing reliable and safe power. Exelon Nuclear (Warrenville, Illinois), a business unit of Exelon Corporation (NYSE:EXC) (Chicago, Illinois) and operator of the largest nuclear fleet in the nation, is preparing for a refueling outage this fall on a 1,152-megawatt (MW) Unit #2 at the Peach Bottom Nuclear Power Station (Delta, Pennsylvania), while having just completed a refuel on Unit #1 at the Limerick Nuclear Power Station (Pottstown, Pennsylvania).

With a total plant capacity of 2,304 megawatts, the Peach Bottom nuclear facility includes two General Electric boiling-water-reactors (BWRs) and two General Electric tandem-compound turbine/generator sets. Unit #2 came online in 1973 with an operating license set to expire in 2013, while Unit #3 became operational in 1973, with a license set to expire in 2014. Unit #3 is also scheduled for a refueling in the last quarter of 2007.

Exelon’s Limerick Nuclear plant also consists of two 1139-megawatt General Electric boiling-water-reactors and turbine/generator sets. Unit #2 is scheduled for a refuel in the spring of 2007 and Unit #1 in 2008. Refueling outages at Exelon’s nuclear plants occur approximately every 24 months.

Twenty-five years after the worst reactor accident in U.S. history in 1979, at Amergen Energy’s (Kenneth Square, Pennsylvania), a subsidiary of Exelon Corporation, Three-Mile Island Nuclear Power Station (Middletown, Pennsylvania), the 872-megawatt Babcock & Wilcox pressurized-water-reactor (PWR) that became operational in 1974, continues to operate with verifiable improvement by setting record in 2005 for a continuous run of 689 days without having to go offline for unplanned outages.

A refueling outage is scheduled at the plant in the spring of next year, while a study is being conducted to have the steam generators replaced by 2009.
