Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Alabama Power Company (Birmingham, Alabama), a subsidiary of Southern Company (NYSE:SO) (Atlanta, Georgia), continues with its extensive environmental compliance program by completing the $120 million selective catalytic reduction (SCR) project last month on Unit #5 at the Earnest C Gaston Power Station (Wilsonville, Alabama). For details, see related February 27, 2006 news article titled - Project spending for Alabama Power could exceed $1.5-billion over the next five years).
Detailed design is also being developed on a $200 million flue gas desulfurization (FGD) scrubber project on Unit #3 and #4 at the James H Miller Power Station in Quinton, Alabama. The project scope includes the installation of two wet scrubbers using Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) double contact flow scrubber (DCFS) technology on two 765-megawatt coal-fired Babcock & Wilcox opposed-fired dry bottom boilers to reduce sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions. This scrubber technology is relatively new in the U.S., but it has been widely used throughout Asia and Europe. Construction is scheduled for the first quarter of 2008, with completion in 2010. Units #1 and #2 will be done at a later time.
Tennessee Valley Authority (NYSE:TVE) (Chattanooga, Tennessee) has plans to reduce particulate matter on its 550-megawatt Unit #5 at The Colbert Power Station (Tuscumbia, Alabama) by upgrading or replacing the existing electrostatic precipitator (ESP) on a Babcock & Wilcox opposed-fired unit, or possibly install a fabric filter baghouse. The project is scheduled to start in the fall of 2007 and completion is slated for January of 2008.
