Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Eosol Energy de Mexico SAPI de CV (Mexico City, Mexico) and Canadian Solar Incorporated (NASDAQ:CSIQ) (Guelph, Ontario) recently began construction on a 16.8-megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic (PV) power station in Durango, Mexico. The $50 million Tai-I power station is Mexico's second-largest photovoltaic project to date. It is expected to help the country meet its future renewable power goals.
TSK Electronica y Electricidad S.A. (Mexico City) was picked as the engineering and construction contractor for the Tai-I project. Construction of the first phase will involve the installation of 16 Canadian Solar MaxPower CS6X solar panels, each 1.05 MW and made of thin-film polycrystalline photovoltaic solar modules, and the balance-of-plant equipment. Power produced will be supplied to the local grid.
The power station will be sited on about 400 acres and will provide enough electricity for about 16,000 local homes. Additional phases are expected to follow, and the facility may be expanded to about 200 MW in the following two years.
Mexico's electricity mostly comes from fossil fuels, but the country is the leading solar energy producer in Latin America. About 40 employees will be needed in the construction phase of the project, and it will require five employees for the operation and maintenance of the station.
Civil site construction of the first phase began earlier this year. The facility is expected to be operational in the fall of 2014, if all goes well.
