Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Cleveland Electric Illuminating’s Perry Nuclear Station has postponed the return of 1,253 megawatt Unit 01. The unit is currently involved in a refueling outage, which began in early April. The scope of work for this outage includes replacing fuel assemblies in the reactor, inspection of valves, and replacement of two low-pressure turbine rotors in the main generator. The unit was originally scheduled to resume operations on May 1, however, blade equipment issues and delays in fuel movement have forced the station to postpone its return to full operation. Engineers are hoping to have these issues resolved and the unit available to the grid by May 11.

The Perry Nuclear Power Plant is situated on 1,100 acres outside of Cleveland in Perry, Ohio. The station became operational in 1987, and with a cost of $6 billion, it is one of the most expensive power plants ever built in the United States. In 2006, the station set a new record high in generation by safely producing 10.5 million megawatt hours of electricity, surpassing its previous record of 10.2 million set in 2004.

Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company is a subsidiary of FirstEnergy (NYSE:FE), a diversified energy company headquartered in Akron, Ohio. FirstEnergy is involved in the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity. It owns seven electric utility operating companies and is the nation’s fifth largest investor owned electric system. It serves customers in Ohio, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania with nearly 14,000 megawatts of capacity.
